Madison Township veteran receives free roof replacement

News-Herald - 11/30/2023

Nov. 30—A U.S. Army veteran who resides in Madison Township got a new roof installed on his home free of charge, thanks to a program spearheaded by a manufacturer of building and construction materials.

David Glover, who lives on Shelly Drive, received the new roof through the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. This nationwide program strives to honor and help those who served in the U.S. armed forces.

The new roof was installed at Glover's home on Nov. 30. Owens Corning teamed with Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity and Absolute Roofing and Construction Inc. of Cleveland to carry out the project.

Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity accepted and reviewed Glover's application for the program and notified Owens Corning that he met qualifications to receive a new roof.

The company then enlisted the help of Absolute Roofing and Construction Inc., which is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred roofing contractor. This status is given to Owens Corning's top tier of contractors, which offer the highest level of service.

Owens Corning Foundation provided the materials for the roof replacement, while the labor was donated by Absolute Roofing and Construction Inc.

Glover, who served in the Army from 2006 to 2012, expressed his gratitude to all entities that helped make the project a reality. He said the new roof seemed like an early Christmas present.

Chris Kamis, president of Absolute Roofing & Construction Inc., estimated that about $20,000 worth of labor and materials went into the new roof that was put on Glover's house.

When Glover submitted his application to the Owens Corning program earlier this year, he noted that water had been leaking through his home's dining room ceiling, Kamis said.

"I came out and did an inspection, and I saw that the whole roof was in really, really poor shape," Kamis said. "So a replacement roof was in the cards."

Kamis said the project at Glover's home involved tearing off old shingles; replacing any bad wood on the roof deck; adding new underlayment (the material that goes between the roof deck and shingles), and then installing Owens Corning Duration Shingles. He said these shingles are a top-of-the-line product from Owens Corning.

In the past four years, Absolute Roofing and Construction Inc. has installed five new roofs as part of Owens Corning's Operation Roof Deployment Project.

Kamis said Absolute Roofing and Construction Inc. enjoys being involved in the program.

"When we were asked to participate, I actually brought it to all of our employees in the company, and every single employee said they wanted to be part of it," he said. "Everybody wants to help and give back to the veterans, and the veteran community, because there's such a need for it. And they've done so much for us, it's only right for us to give back."

Owens Corning, which is based in Toledo, launched its Roof Deployment Project in 2016. Over the past eight years, this endeavor has provided 500 free roofs to U.S. veterans in need.
