Mental health summit coming later this month

The Brandon Sun - 2/20/2020

The Brandon & Area Suicide Prevention Implementation Network is set to host its fourth Stomp Out Stigma Summit later this month.

The summit is scheduled for Feb. 27 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium, where approximately 75 high school students and staff from the region are set to take part. Up to 10 students from each participating school can attend the summit.

The summit will focus on conversations around mental health, stigma and the importance of seeking help at a young age, a press release says. One in seven youth in Manitoba were diagnosed with a mental disorder between 2009 and 2013, but 75 per cent of young Canadians with mental health issues don’t ask for help.

"We know that high school is when many begin to experience symptoms often associated with mental health problems or mental illness. However, because of stigma and a lack of understanding and education, many students don’t know who to turn to for help, or are too embarrassed or scared to discuss their feelings," the press release reads.

The event is a partnership between SPIN, Prairie Mountain Health, Brandon School Division, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba and the Canadian Mental Health Association of Manitoba
