New veterans park coming to Pacolet

Herald-Journal - 3/23/2019

March 23-- Mar. 23--Plans to build a new Veterans Park on McDowell Street in Pacolet are moving forward.

The project is part of an overall plan by the Pacolet Lions Club to transform a half-acre site into a new park honoring local veterans. The Spartanburg School District 3 board of trustees agreed this week to lease the site of the park at no cost to the Pacolet Lions Club for 20 years with options of renewal. The tract of land is between Pacolet Elementary School and the Pacolet branch of the Spartanburg County public library on McDowell Street.

The property is currently vacant.

"It's impossible to repay our current military and veterans for everything they have given to this country," Superintendent Kenny Blackwood said. "We can do our part to say thank you and let them know their service and sacrifices will always be appreciated. This park will be designed with help from our students and veterans to make sure it's something everyone in the community can say they helped create and will look after."

Pacolet Lions Club Treasurer Billy Spencer said American and POW flags will soon be installed at the site. A memorial plaque will also be featured. Eventually, the park may include a memorial sidewalk with bricks featuring the names of local veterans who have served.

"We have been working on developing the park for over a year," Spencer said. "The new park will be something the community can be proud of."

American flags will first be placed at the site representing each branch of the U.S. military. A large rock will also be installed with a plaque honoring local veterans.
