‘Hats On for Mental Health Day’ celebrated at Wm. E. Hay

The Stettler Independent - 4/27/2017

WILDCATS' CORNER -- Report cards came out last week, and parent teacher interviews are today, April 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the high school. Band festival was yesterday. Congratulations to all who participated. The Grand Concert will be on Sunday, April 30. Registration for the 2017-2018 school year is ongoing until April 28, having started on April 21.

Next week is Mental Health Week. There will be a number of activities at the school to raise awareness around mental health and reduce stigma around mental illness. Wednesday will be “Hats On for Mental Health” day, YCAT will be revealing a Friendship Bench, and approximately one in every five students will be wearing an emerald green t-shirt which reads “1 in 5” across the front. This will be a visual representation of the approximately one in five Canadians who experience mental health issues. In a school the size of Wm. E. Hay Stettler Secondary Campus, that’s over 150 students who may be experiencing mental illness in their lifetime. CARS staff from Clearview’s Mental Health Capacity Building Initiative will be visiting the Grade 7 and 8 classrooms with information and activities around supporting mental wellness. Please GET LOUD for mental health this week by wearing a hat on Wednesday, and talking openly about mental health and wellness.

Wm. E. Hay Stettler Secondary Campus is also hosting its first annual Wellness Showcase on Thursday, May 4 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Parents, students, and community members are invited to participate in a variety of half-hour sessions that will focus on fitness, nutrition, mental health, and a variety of other topics. Presenters will range from fellow community members to teachers and students from Wm. E. Hay. Following the Wellness Showcase, parents are invited to attend a presentation from Dr. Jody Carrington starting at 7 p.m., titled, “Our Parenting Superpowers: A Discussion about the Relationship that Mean the Most to Us.”
